Going to the dentist has never been a pleasant experience, but back in 1890th, it was downright horrible.

When the only ones that could treat a toothache were called barber-surgeons, a visit to these “professionals” usually ended up with people leaving worse than they got there.

Add in the fact that anesthetic was a rare commodity and people’s teeth were yanked for no apparent reason, and you’ve got yourself a nightmarish experience. It should come as no surprise that “teeth” was one of the most common causes of death in those days.
